She’s not a keyboard who misses much, but I can’t say she’s well acquainted to the touch of a velvet hand. Nor is there a lizard on a window pane or a man in the crowd with the multicolored mirrors. But, happiness is certainly a backlit-mechanical keyboard.
Santa brought me a Daskeyboard Prime 13. I’d been wanting a mechanical keyboard for some time, and backlit seemed like it would be nice for late-night Oppoing. I also wanted something for adults, so lots of RGB board were out. Cherry MX brown switches. The backlighting is actually a soft white, although my potato camera really struggled with it even on the dimmest setting. It’ s actually just a nice, slight glow. This is my first foray into modern mechanical keyboards, and I’m a happy camper. This thing is awesome. There’s feedb ack and I love the action of the keys. Now I want to go out and buy another one for work.

Single color keyboards are great. I really like the long key travel of mechanical keyboards after using my roommate’s board. Unfortunately, he has Cherry reds in his and they are L O U D.

I can imagine that. Even this one is something that I may to have to close the door to the computer room when I’m late-night Oppoing, at least for longer posts.

They are really nice. I have a mechanical at home and have been thinking of trying to arrange one for work. It's a reminder that I need to find my passwords so I don't have to oppo on my phone all the time..

I was really disappointed going from my old Zenbook Prime which had a backlit keyboard to a newer Zenbook which did not. I generally don’t care for my de sk top as my screens illuminate my desk top keyboard fine. I did get an illuminated Logitech K830 for my HTPC, though obviously no one dreams about typing on one of those.

For me, quality mechanical switches in an adult package was the main draw. Finding something also backlit was an added bonus, but so far I like it even more that I expected. Speaking of quality, the face plate of the keyboard is aluminium, and the rest of the chassis is stout too. This keyboard weighs almost as much as a laptop.

Can you adjust the backlight? It looks quite bright in the picture, so I imagine it could be quite distracting in the dark.
I recently bought a Unicomp Classic 104 for work
. No backlights, no multimedia keys, no angry teenager styling, just a big slab with buckling spring switch keys
on top.

Yes, there are seven levels of adjustment. This picture was actually the lowest level, and was actually really dim. The way it looks in the picture was my phone camera unable to deal with the back lighting in an intelligent way. Any picture I tried with the lighting on, no matter how dim, it oversaturated the crap out of the back lighting. Even the highest settings are not nearly as bright as my phone would lead you to think.

I’ve bounced around so many keyboards over the last few years, that I’ve almost had a hard time differentiating some of them. But I have learned that backlighting is important in a couple of ways.
If the lights are bright and under the keypads, but there’s no illumination through the keys themselves, I miss keys like crazy. If the light is almost entirely through the keys, I lose the edges and will often tap two keys at once. The sweet spot is having light through the keys and a soft glow under and around the keys.
Even though it isn’t a super expensive board, the one I’m currently using is a Redragon K556 with Cherry MX Brown switches. Gotta say, it was worth the $50 or so it cost.

Awesome! I have two Das Keyboard 4’s with MX Brown switches in my office at work and absolutely love them. I’m pretty jealous of the backlight - I went without after having it on a Corsair keyboard and now I miss it. That keyboard should serve you well. I’ve been busily programming and writing reports on both of mine for over a year now with no issues and the MX Brown Corsair I had before held up to five years of abuse in the office no problem. (I actually still have it but it doesn’t play well with my Apple fleet at home so it mostly collects dust on my one Windows PC that rarely gets used.)
